In alignment with Maine's new "Bell-to-Bell No Cell" law, the Ellsworth School Department is updating its Personal Electronic Device (PED) policy for the 2026-27 school year.
Under the updated policy, student use of personal electronic devices is prohibited from the first morning bell until the final dismissal bell. This policy applies to cell phones, smartwatches, personal tablets or computers, and any other devices, regardless of whether they possess cellular or internet capabilities. To ensure students remain connected to their coursework, all students will use school-issued devices throughout the school day.

Guidelines by Grade Level
Pre-K through Grade 5
For students in Pre-K through Grade 5 at Ellsworth Elementary Middle School, personal electronic devices are prohibited during the school day.
Devices must either be kept at home or turned off upon arrival and stored in student bags or lockers.
Students may only use cell phones, smartwatches, and other personal electronic devices after school dismissal.
If a student remains after school for academic or behavioral purposes, devices must stay off and secured inside student bags or lockers for the full duration of the activity.
Grades 6 through 12 & HCTC
Students in Grades 6–12 attending Ellsworth Elementary Middle School, Ellsworth High School, or Hancock County Technical Center (HCTC) will be issued an Ellsworth School Department pouch for their devices.
Personal electronic devices must be turned off and placed in pouches upon arrival—either before entering or right inside the door—where they will remain secured through dismissal.
HCTC students must secure their devices in a pouch for the entire duration of their time in the building.
If a student remains after school for academic or behavioral purposes, devices must stay secured inside the pouch for the full duration of the activity.
How the PED Pouches Work
The ESD pouches provided to students in Grades 6–12 are signal-blocking to eliminate digital distractions during instruction.
Securing Devices: Students place turned-off devices inside their designated pouch before entering the building or at the door upon arrival.
Unlocking Devices: At dismissal, students can unlock their pouches using designated magnet stations located near school exits.
Nurses, Health Clinic & Family Communications
Personal electronic devices are strictly prohibited in the nurse's office and the School-Based Health Clinic.
Nurse Communication: School nurses will continue to contact families directly regarding student health concerns as needed.
Calling Home: If a student is sick and needs to reach a parent or guardian, they must place the call using a school landline in the main office.

Families with questions, comments, or concerns are encouraged to contact their respective building administrator for additional guidance. Exemptions may be made for students with documented medical diagnosis or other conditions that require the use of a personal device.
